Delta 8 THC, also known as Delta8 THC or just D8-THC, is a rare form of cannabinoid that is very similar to delta 9 tetrahydrocannabinol (THC). It is a slightly psychoactive compound with mild euphoric and painkilling effects. Shulgin’s book Tihkal describes it as “a subtly psychedelic drug which has no pronounced mental effects.” However, the effects are described as being “noticeably more” than CBD or CBN. In comparison to other cannabinoids such as CBD and CBC, Delta8-THC has been shown to be about 2-3 times more potent with little difference in duration.
There have been only two studies on Delta8-THC, both from the group of Dr. Mechoulam. The first is a paper published in 1976 that showed it to be about 40% as psychoactive as THC with twice the antiemetic strength and five times the potency of CBD in an anti-cancer experiment using mice.
The second study around 1980 found Delta8-THC to have “approximately one tenth” the psychoactivity of THC along with antitumor effects on mice similar to CBD and CBN. It also seems to cause a rather strong inhibition of intestinal activity when taken orally due to poor absorption efficiency, somewhat resembling the effect expected from oral administration of CBD or CBC but without affecting cardiovascular parameters such as heart rate or blood pressure.
It occurs naturally at very low levels in most cannabis products and has a very low affinity for CB1 and CB2 receptors. Delta8-THC is not scheduled by the UN conventions on drug control, but its status may be influenced by:
Delta 8 THC takes effect in 30 to 90 minutes when vaporized or smoked and lasts 1-3 hours orally (an hour longer than THC). It is soluble in lipids like other cannabinoids. Although there has been little research done on D8 THC, it appears that because of its low psychoactivity compared to regular weed, it can be considered an inactive ingredient.
