In the last two decades, BOTOX has become one of the most popular cosmetic procedures performed globally. Known to relax and prevent wrinkles, people of all ages undergo BOTOX injections every day. At Seattle Plastic Surgery, Dr. Craig Jonov and his team of elite injectors provide hundreds of BOTOX injections every month.
BOTOX is largely considered safe and effective. However, while many people know that BOTOX can make the skin and face look younger, not everyone knows how it works. What exactly does BOTOX do?
How BOTOX Works
BOTOX is a type of cosmetic injection known as a neuromodulator. Neuromodulators contain a toxin known as Botulinum toxin A. This is derived from the same toxin which causes botulism. However, BOTOX contains only small, concentrated amounts of the toxin that act only within the injected area and provide only partial and temporary paralyzation of certain facial muscles.
When injected, BOTOX works to block signals to the brain from the muscle and nerves. This prevents involuntary and unnecessary movements that can cause wrinkles to form. For example, when raising your eyebrows, you may notice horizontal lines appear. If you receive BOTOX in the forehead, this can prevent these lines from showing up, but still allow some brow movement to maintain facial expressions.
On average, BOTOX lasts three months. This means that you will need future treatments to keep the results. However, if you receive regular BOTOX injections, you may find that you need less over time.
Other Uses Of BOTOX
The most common use of BOTOX is to treat and prevent facial wrinkles. However, there are many other uses of BOTOX, including medical and cosmetic. When it comes to medical treatments, BOTOX in Seattle is used for migraines, hyperhidrosis, and muscle disorders. Similar to cosmetic uses of BOTOX, the injections temporarily block certain messages from the muscles and nerves. This can reduce the frequency of chronic migraines, prevent sweating, and involuntary movements.
Other cosmetic procedures that use BOTOX include correcting a gummy smile, the BOTOX lip flip, and correcting other facial lines. During gummy smile correction, BOTOX is injected in and around the upper lip to lower it to conceal the gums when smiling. A BOTOX lip flip works in a similar way. Some patients may have a thin upper lip but are happy with the volume of their lower lip. A BOTOX lip flip can reveal more of the natural upper lip to provide plumper, more symmetrical lips.
